5 IPL records that could be broken in 2022 edition
Cricket fans all over the world have their eyes on the calendar as the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to get underway on March 26. IPL 2022 is set to be a grand affair with two new teams – Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants – coming into the picture. Hence, for the very first time since the 2011 season, 10 teams will be in the action.
It must be noted that squads for this year’s tournament were decided in the mega auction, where several teams went under massive revamps. Hence, new groups of players will be in action. Owing to all these factors, IPL 2022 is expected to be a blockbuster and hence, fans must buckle up.
Meanwhile, let’s look at five records that can be broken in IPL 2022:
Most wickets in IPL
This record is all but certain to be shattered as Chennai Super Kings’ Dwayne Bravo requires just four scalps to get the landmark. With 170 wickets, former Mumbai Indians pacer Lasith Malinga currently tops this list. However, the Sri Lankan great is retired now and Bravo has a great chance to go past his tally. Given the former West Indies all-rounder generally bowls the death overs, he should be able to get the landmark in the initial half of the season.
Fastest spinner to 100 IPL wickets
The record is currently held by former Royal Challengers Bangalore leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. The Haryana-born took 83 matches to get the milestone in 2019. This means Rashid Khan, who’ll play for Gujarat Titans this year, needs just seven wickets in six games to get the feat. He currently has 93 scalps in 76 matches in the competition. Given Rashid is arguably the best T20 bowler at the moment, he should get the landmark pretty comfortably.
Most IPL centuries
‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle is currently atop this list, having smashed six centuries in IPL. However, Gayle won’t feature in this season and hence, his tally won’t enhance further. Virat Kohli and David Warner, having scored five and four IPL tons respectively, are the front-runners to go past Gayle’s tally. Both batters play in the top-order and are known for their consistent scoring.
Most runs in a season
Now, this might be a big claim but Virat Kohli’s tally of 973 runs in the 2016 season might be crossed this season. From KL Rahul to David Warner, several dashing top-order batters will be in action, raring to make a significant mark. With the expansion of the tournament, the overall bowling strength of all teams looks relatively weaker in comparison to the last season. Hence, batters are set to enjoy a gala time.
Most sixes in an IPL season
As mentioned above, the bowling attacks of teams aren’t looking as daunting as compared to the previous seasons. Hence, the record of most sixes in an IPL season might also get shattered. Having smashed 59 maximums in 2012, Chris Gayle currently holds the record. As a team can play a maximum of 17 matches in IPL 2022, we can see Gayle’s tally being surpassed.
