5 bowlers to pick double hat-trick in international cricket
Scalping up a hat-trick in cricket is quite a big achievement in itself. However, there have been few instances where the bowlers have gone a step ahead and picked up a double hat-trick (4 wickets in 4 balls). Here’s a look at five instances where bowlers have grabbed four wickets in four balls in the international arena.
Lasith Malinga (2007)
South Africa were 206/5, while chasing a target of just 210 to win and were at a striking distance from a comfortable win. However, pacer Lasith Malinga had some other plans. At first, Malinga cleaned up Shaun Pollock and Andrew Hall in the 45th over of the match. Coming back to bowl the 47th over Malinga sent packing Jacques Kallis and then cleaned up Makhaya Ntini. However, the Proteas managed to score the remaining three runs, winning the match by just one wicket.
Lasith Malinga (2019)
Veteran pacer Lasith Malinga become the first bowler to scalp two double hat-tricks in the international arena. Malinga achieved this feat against T20I match against New Zealand. Chasing 126, the Kiwi openers Colin Munro and Tim Seifert stitched 15 before Malinga rattled Munro’s leg stump to get his 100th Twenty20 international wicket. The right-arm-pacer then removed Hamish Rutherford and Colin de Grandhomme in his next two balls to get his second hat-trick in the T20 format before trapping Ross Taylor lbw for his fourth wicket in the over.
Rashid Khan (2019)
Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan achieved this feat during a match against Ireland in 2019. Afghanistan batted first and scored 210/7. In reply, Ireland were 153/3 when Rashid dismissed Kevin O’Brien on the last ball of the 16th over. The leg-spinner then returned to bowl the 18th over and scalped the wickets of George Dockrell, Shane Getkate, and Simi Singh to scalp his first double hat-trick.
Curtis Campher (2021)
Ireland medium-pacer Curtis Campher registered his name in the history books after he scalped a double hat-trick in a match against Netherland in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in Abu Dhabi. The pacer sent back Colin Ackermann, Ryan ten Doeschate and Scott Edwards to take a hat-trick, before adding Roelof van der Merwe to his list of victims.
Jason Holder (2022)
West Indies allrounder Jason Holder is the fifth bowler to achieve this feat. The right-arm pacer achieved this feat in the fifth and final T20I match series against England this year in January. With England needing 20 runs in the final over to win the match, Holder destroyed the hopes of the visitors. The right-arm-pacer scalped wickets of Chris Jordan, Sam Billings, Adil Rashid and Saqib Mahmood to register his career-best bowling figures of 2.5-0-27-5.
