3 players who were unlucky to miss out from India’s Asia Cup squad
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday, August 8 announced the 15-member Indian squad for Asia Cup 2022 starting August 27. The Men in Blue will begin their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan in Dubai on the 28th. Rohit Sharma will lead the defending champions and vice-captain KL Rahul will make a comeback from a groin injury that kept him out of action since June. More importantly, all eyes will be on batting megastar Virat Kohli. However, a few players were unlucky to miss out on selection for the upcoming tournament. Without further ado, here’s a look at three of them.
3. Ishan Kishan:
Ishan Kishan’s exclusion was arguably the most shocking for one and all, as it appeared that he would be in the scheme of things in the shortest format. However, the selectors thought otherwise. The southpaw played only a match each in the last two bilateral series against England and the West Indies registering scores of eight and 11 respectively and found himself sidelined. Given Kishan’s stellar series against South Africa and his role as a left-handed wicketkeeper who could open the innings, one would have expected him to be part of the team’s plans.
2. Kuldeep Yadav
Kuldeep Yadav looked to make a strong statement on his India comeback oozing with confidence after a dream run in IPL 2022 for the Delhi Capitals. Unfortunately, an injury also ruled him out in between for a while. Once he was fit, the wrist-spinner was made to warm the bench in the first four T20Is in the recently-concluded West Indies series and only got a chance in the fifth game. Nonetheless, he proved his mettle in the solitary appearance with a 3/12. Despite that, the UP cricketer was overlooked by the selectors.
- Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer was one of the consistent performers in the West Indies T20Is and had even scored a match-winning 40-ball 64 in the fifth T20I. Unfortunately for Iyer, he missed out on the 15-member Asia Cup squad that was named by the BCCI recently. However, the Mumbai cricketer has been named one of the standbys for Asia Cup 2022 along with bowling all-rounder Deepak Chahar and left-arm spinner Axar Patel.
