3 memorable wins for India in Women’s 50-over World Cup

The ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 is around the corner and all the participating teams would be looking forward to stake their claim on the coveted trophy. India are one of those teams. The Indian Eves would be led by veteran Mithali Raj and they would be hoping to go one step further this time around after faltering at the final hurdle last season.

The Women in Blue would kickstart their campaign against Pakistan on March 6. Ahead of the Women’s World Cup, here’s a look at India’s past performances in the showpiece event.

India vs New Zealand semifinal 2005

India and New Zealand had locked horns in the second semifinal of the 2005 Women’s World Cup at Sedgars Park in Potchefstroom on April 7. The Indian eves were restricted to 204/6 from their 50 overs after skipper Mithali Raj had tremendously led from the front with an unbeaten 91. In reply, the Black Caps were bundled out for 164 as India qualified for their maiden World Cup final with a well-deserved 40 run win.

India had kicked off their 2017 World Cup campaign against hosts and eventual champions England at the County Ground in Derby on June 24. Stellar knocks from Punam Raut (86), Smriti Mandhana (90) and captain Mithali (71) propelled them to a stiff total of 281/3 from their 50 overs. England in their run chase were all out for 246 in the 48th over as India won by 35 runs.

India vs Australia second semifinal 2017

A spirited India had faced Australia in the second semifinal at Derby on July 20. The rain-curtailed match saw the overs cut down to 42 overs per side. After being reduced to 35/2, Harmanpreet Kaur scored a whirlwind unbeaten 171 off just 115 deliveries that helped the Women in Blue post a mammoth total of 281/4. The then defending champions’ title reign came to an end as they were all out for 245 in the penultimate over.
