3 controversies in IPL 2022

The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has entered its final phase now. Fans from across the world have been entertained with some solid batting performances and some excellent bowling spells so far. However, IPL 2022 was also marked by some controversies on the field. On that note, let us take a look at three controversies that occurred during IPL 2022 group stage matches.

DRS denial in CSK vs MI

The defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were taking on the five-time champions Mumbai Indians in a group stage match. After losing the toss, CSK opening batters Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway took the crease. As it happened, Kiwi batter Conway was struck on the pad and was given out LBW to a delivery that seemed sliding down the leg-side. The left-handed batter demanded a review. However, due to some technical issues, the DRS was not available and the New Zealand batter had to trudge back to the pavilion.

DC-RR no-ball controversy

The Delhi Capitals were down and out during a group stage match against the Rajasthan Royals (RR). With 36 needed in the last six balls, West Indies power hitter Rovman Powell started his pursuit with three maximums. However, the DC team management along with the batters present on the crease felt that the third delivery should be called a no-ball for height when the umpires thought otherwise.
The camera was then panned towards DC skipper Pant who was seen calling the batters back to the pavilion. He even sent assistant coach Pravin Amre inside the field to talk with the umpires. However, it did not yield any result as DC lost that contest eventually. Pant and Amre were later fined for their conduct.

Kane Williamson’s controversial dismissal against RR

The Sunrisers Hyderabad were taking on the Rajasthan Royals in a group stage match of IPL 2022. The duo of Kane Williamson and Abhishek Sharma took the crease for the Orange Army. Indian pacer Prasidh Krishna who was bowling the second over SRH innings managed to induce an edge from Williamson’s bat and it went towards the wicketkeeper Samson. However, Samson failed to complete the catch as the ball slipped off his right hand and went towards the first-slip fielder Devdutt Padikkal. The decision was sent to the third umpire for review.
In the replays, it was seen that the ball might have touched the ground as Padikkal was completing the catch. However, the umpire gave the decision in RR’s favor and Williamson had to walk back after scoring just seven runs. Later on, the Orange Army registered an official complaint about the controversial dismissal stating that the benefit of doubt should have gone to the batsman.
